Project Segway - T Gauge Video Update 2020

 I finally got around to putting together the brief video I shot of the T gauge Layout I have been building for the CRMHA and show each year at the Central Train Show in February. You can see some of the related posts here.


The end of the video also shows the new 120mm Radius Concrete Viaduct that I have offered through ModelWorks. There is already a 132.5mm Radius version, so there are now two options for the T gauges out there.

I have a number of additional project en route for both ModelWorks and for this little T gauge gem. I particular, I am interested in the rumored new turnout that may be available in December? At least I hope so. COVID-19 has a couple of other projects delayed.

Project Segway - Another Bridge and Another Building

I also said I was working on another bridge for the layout. I decided that I needed something to the left of the station before the tunnel portal, and a bridge seems like a good choice. It also will allow me to add a small stream and waterfall into the layout.

I picked a deck girder bridge for the plan, and found a plan on the internet. I was able to turn this into a 55mm long bridge in T, which makes it 24.75m long (81.2') which is a good size bridge.

I did not plan the bridge far enough ahead of the show to have it on hand for the show, but the bridge arrived from Shapeways on Friday.

The bridge is currently being prepped for priming. I hope to add it to the ModelWorks shope next week after I get it painted.

Along with the bridge, I also got a pair of 3D printed Pattern Makers Pins. These pins can be used to align adjacent train modules. They were used in the MR Canadian Canyons Project layout.

I haven't had a lot of luck ordering them from the same source that MR used - and I haven't found a domestic US source. So, I thought I would make some of my own. They mate with a 0.1mm tolerance (as-built). So, if installed properly, they should make it feasible to align two sections of a layout to a tight tolerance. The design is very close to being ready, but needs a little more work.

I also have one more project coming from Shapeways this week. Fresh off painting all those T houses for the layout, I decided to design one of my own, this one with interior detailing and that could be printed in kit form for easier painting by separating the walls and roof. And if I was going to do the interiors, that also meant separating the walls and floors inside.

I have both a kit version and an assembled version on order from Shapeways. I'm looking forward to seeing the first prototypes, and even maybe having to find a spot for them on the layout.

Project Segway - T-gauge Highway Part 2

Well, the 2020 Central Train Show has come and gone. The attendance was similar to 2019 (good) and the general word from the vendors was that sales were also good. So, the show was a big success.

We ran almost the whole weekend on a single engine - changing over to a short freight towards the end led by a class 67. I have a video to get edited and posted, so when I do that I will add it to the blog.


The major addition in 2020 was the highway through the module, as seen above. The road is printed in color complete with markings on paper and laminated to first a 0.005" thick piece of styrene. To the center of the road I laminated a 0.010"x0.020" strip of styrene, and then laminated the whole thing to a 0.010" styrene strip that was cut about 1/4" wider to 1/8" wider for sidewalks. The result gave the road a subtle crown effect. Maybe too subtle , but I know it is there.

Where the sidewalks were, I laminated another piece of 0.010" styrene as a sidewalk - prepainted in a concrete color and scribed with expansion joints. A little bit of chalk weathering, and the whole things was done and I laminated it onto the layout.

Up to this point, I had followed the steps used in MR on the Canadian Canyons Layout to model Canada Highway 1. Here I messed up. I should have sprayed the road with dullcoat to seal it before mounting. I didn't. I also should have done a better job of smoothing the surface before mounting the road. As a result, I will have to do some rework on the road to eliminate a few bumps, and to fill a few extreme dips that the road and surface exposed. In T, these are all too easy to create. I do expect to be able to spray the road with dullcoat after I am done so that the scenery nearby does not ruin the road.

I will also need to adjust the pedestrian bridge. It is about an eight of an inch too far to the right in the photo above. After that, the buildings need chimneys, doors and window painted. Then, I will need to add a few driveways and little bit of road by the station and the garden houses at track level.

Project Segway - Central Model Train Show Day 2

Well Day 2 is in the books and the 2020 Central Model Train Show is over. The Central T-gauge Layout received numerous compliments, and a lot of stares in amazement.

I remembered to get a good shot of the bridge with the mirror I added. The effect is pretty good, and will be better once the backdrop supports it better.

We figure we ran about 1500 scale miles (m,ore than 3 real miles) during the show with very few problems. Most of that was with one engine. However, I did get out my Class 67, along with a couple of coal cars to pull a freight late in the day. I need to get some more coal cars. once I added the weights to the cars, the train ran well.

I have some thoughts about relocating a few buildings, and I have one more bridge to add to the line to the left of the water tank in the view above. This will also mean that I will cut into the cliff here and add a waterfall. Waterfalls always draw attention. There are a few bits of road that will need some work, and some sculptamold is needed by the bridges. However, it was a good show for the layout. I plan to upload a new video in a few days too.

I also have another T-gauge building project completed - and if it comes out okay from Shapeways, I hope to have a new addition to the layout - or to the next layout. We will see. I have anumber of things to work on for next year, including further work on the town, adding driveways, mounting the buildings in their final positions, the station platform, the new bridge, a bit of scultamold work, ground cover, water, trees, bushes, etc, and vehicles. Lots to do, and other projects on my mind as well.

Project Segway - Central Model Train Show Day 1

Day 1 is in the books. It was an adventure getting to the show yesterday morning - more on that next week - but the layout made its appearance.

The painted buildings make a big difference, and the road and adjoining sidewalks are in place. The layout ran fairly well, with periodic cleanings necessary. Many folks were impressed with the layout and the fact that it is in something even smaller than Z-scale.

If you are in the upstate tomorrow - come by Easley between 10AM and 5PM. There are lots of vendors, layouts and of course - the mini T-gauge layout to see.

Project Segway - A T-gauge Highway

The second major project for this year's show is the completion of the main road. The road defines the village in the layout, and needs to be installed so that I can install a major pedestrian bridge.

It turned out to be a major bit ow work to figure out a road shape that worked, but with a lot of trial and error, I came up with one.

Once I had a general shape that worked, I had to turn it into a CAD drawing. And then I had to turn that drawing into artwork that could be printed. All this took a number of iterations for shape, line patterns, line weight and color. And then, there is the double and triple checks that it fits as drawn. But here is the result.

There is a little bit more to do with some of the traffic control lines needing to be added. However, with the template correct, it is time to cut the underlayment. Directly under the paper road surface will be a 0.005" thick piece of styrene. I plan to cut another thin 0.005" strip to run down the middle of the road to provide a slight crown to the road. Under this, will be a 0.010" piece of styrene that will support the road and the sidewalks (drawn in purple above). Some of the sidewalks are 10 scale feet wide, others are 5 scale feet wide. The sidewalks will be cut from additional pieces of 0.015" styrene representing. When placed along side the road, there will be about a 0.010" sidewalk height (4.5 scale inches). This is small, but I hope it will be noticeable.

This is a project in progress as of this writing, but we will see if I can have it installed in time for the show. I'll finish describing my installation process in the next post on the highway construction after the show.

Project Segway - Buildings for the Central T-Layout

Post have been sporadic recently, as January was a hard month. My wife's best friend saw her sister pass away due to pancreatic cancer. Then a student I taught died of colon cancer. And on Friday night a friend of ours died after being a car accident. It has been a traumatic few weeks that leaves you thinking about how little time we have in this life and how quickly it may end.

In addition, with the Central Model Train show coming up on Friday, I've been hoping to get some progress made on the Central T-gauge Layout. This will be its third year in the show, and I only seem to make progress as the deadline approaches. And so it is true this year. This has also been particularly difficult for me, as it was shortly after this show last year that I was diagnosed with my heart issues and so every project I seem to start reminds me of those days last spring.

One major project has been painting the buildings. They had all received a grey primer coat two years ago, but I really wanted to get them painted and installed on the layout. I started by using a tacky glue to attach each building to a nail or pin to give me a handle to use while painting the building.

This worked okay - but some of the buildings are quite small, and the tacky glue stuck very well. Even too well.

Once attached, I painted the buildings their desired wall color. I selected these colors based on some photos I had of different English villages. Then, I masked the walls with blue painters tape and painted the roofs.

The results are pretty good. There are a few points where I had some bleed through, but I think I can touch those up by hand. I did all the painting with spray paint, but I really could use an airbrush for these projects.

I still plan to add some paint to the windows, doors and other details when I do the touch ups. But the difference is dramatic. However, I have learned a bit about these 3D printed buildings. They are 1 piece buildings, and masking such tiny buildings is challenging. I think I would design them differently. But they were not my designs, although I may make some buildings of my own for the next T-gauge project. I will make those with painting and decoration in mind.

T Layout 2019

Well it has been a year since I first displayed a T-scale Layout for the Central Model Railway and Historical Society Club at the train show in Easley. And it is time again for the layout. While I did a few things since last year, I have to admit that I got a lot less done on the layout than I had planned last year. 

I did complete a few projects
  1. Details on the stone arch bridge
  2. Design, Print, Paint the brick pedestrian bridge
  3. Plan the roadways
  4. Install a few trees

But I was pretty disappointed to see how little I completed. Nonetheless, the layout performed well and I put together a few videos of a train on the layout...



The stone arch bridge is now just about ready for permanent installation. I've added the iron details and the drain pipes. I do need to trim the drain pipes back to ground level in a few spots, but that is a going to be a quick task.


I also added a few trees to the layout - wire armature trees near the water and a pine tree near the barn. I also added a small dog house near the barn...



After the weekend, I am pretty happy with the road layout, so one of the next projects will be to build and install the finished roads using vinyl graphics. Once the road is installed, I feel good about installing the bridges. 

The newest bridge looks really good - but it still needs to be permanently installed in the layout.

The pedestrian bridge still needs to be cut into the scenery but the mirror will be very effective with the roadway running into it. 

The layout continued to remind me that the radii are a little tight for some of the longer equipment but short trains look best anyways. I have decided to add one more small bridge to the layout, located between the station and the tunnel to carry the railroad over a stream/river.

Scenery needs to be the focus going forward. The only construction still remaining is a bit of improvement to the lighting and backdrop. But those items will come after the scenery is substantially complete. I also was looking forward to testing my new PWM controller I got for the layout - unfortunately, I learned that the PWM controller actually takes AAA batteries - even though the box says AA - so that will be a later test.

A New Bridge

It has been a while since I have posted, but there has been some slow progress made. Previously, I had shown the pedestrian bridge for the town. I finally had cause to order some parts from Shapeways, and I ordered the bridge too.


On the left is the FUD version, on the right is the professional plastic version. This is a material produced by HP for 3D printing. It is fairly robust, but not quite as fine as the FUD material. The grains you see are not the photograph, but the material. So, for T, not quite good enough for me, but for other scales....

Anyways, the bridge needed a bit of painting to give it a nice brick color, and then some concrete washes to bring out the individual bricks, and the concrete portions of the bridge. I tried several approaches, and actually found that burnishing the paint on with the tip of a toothpick seemed to work best.


One more feature of the bridge is the installation of a mirror under the bridge. In this case, I found a mirrored plastic panel on Amazon.com. This can be easily cut with normal scissors. For a backdrop mirror, I think it works well enough.



You can see the bottom seam of the mirror, but in this case, I have simply set the bridge of a paper printout of the road. I think when I install the real thing, and have the road butting into the mirror, as well as the sidewalks on the sides to add a little 3D definition, and as a result, I expect that the seem will be much more difficult to see.

Against the backdrop, this will be a nice little trick to add depth into the backdrop. Just compare this picture, to the top view of the bridge.


I think it works very well.

Detailed Trees in T

Yes, I may be crazy. I've been thinking a lot about trees for the little layout, As part of that, I have been looking at different ways of making trees and seeing how well they work in T. Most recently, I have been working on some deciduous trees that would stand up to foreground scrutiny. The basic idea is to use stranded wire, in this case 18 gauge speaker wire as the basis for the trunk and branches. In my case, I picked up a roll of 18 gauge stranded wire which has 10 strands of 28 gauge wire. Lengths of this wire, with the insulation removed were cut and used to form tree-like structures.




The process was simple enough. I took a stiff piece of flower wire, about 3/4" long, and inserted into the stranded wire for the trunk. The flower wire extends past the bottom of the trunk to provide an anchor into the scenery. The speaker wire is twisted, and as you go up the tree, you can form smaller limbs and branches from smaller groups of wire twisted together, until yo get to individual strands. There is no particular pattern, just trying to get something that is tree like. A few drops of super glue, strategically located will hold everything together. A few branches may also need to be clipped to length as the tree takes its final form.

Some of the trees use one length of wire strands, others use two or more bunches. The lengths do not need to be identical, but probably need to be close to look right.

After the super glue has set, I use a little bit of caulk adhesive for projects to fill in the trunk and eliminate the stranded look. The key is that whatever material is used, should be paint friendly. At this point, you have a bunch of shiny metal trees. Next up is to paint the trunks.







I first painted the trees with a brownish color, and then followed up with a dark grey. The exact colors don't matter, as long as the look like trees. Most trees have much more of a greyish he to the trunk, but most also have some dark brown or black features. The key with the second grey coat is that this coat focuses more on the trunk, and does not need to cover everything. I follow those paint coats up with a little bit of another grey acrylic paint, brushed onto the trunk and major branches. I used a lighter grey paint, but again, the exact color is up to you, and again, the goal is not full coverage, just adding some color.


This is the result. The trees have some texture due to the colors used int he paint. For a dead tree, or a leafless tree, this is a decent model. Most of the first set of trees I made are in the 25-50 foot range in T. That is about 5/8" tall to 1.25" tall. This approach is much easier in larger scales.

The next step is to add some foliage. I used some polyfil fiber that I had previously painted a dark green color. Darker green is better here than lighter green, as we will add more texture and color. The key is not to make a big piece of polyfil and wrap it all over the tree, but to make a bunch of little balls, that tie into the ends of one small group of branches. Again, a little super glue to help things stay in place is useful. Note also, that sometimes, you can get a spread of roots at the base of the tree from the twisted wire trunk.



Next up, I spray the tree with adhesive spray glue, and sprinkle ground foam on the tree. Try to avoid glue or ground foam on the trunk. Fortunately in this case, the tool used to hold the tree will cover the trunk. Also, make sure to sprinkle ground foam on not only the top, sides, but also the bottom of the tree to get the undersides of the branches. Allow the tree to dry and shake the tree to remove any loose ground foam.




The neat thing about the finished trees is that in the right light and angle, you can actually see through the tree a little bit in places. But at a distance, and not backlit, the trees are solid, just like the real thing.



At this point, a few errant strands of polyfil may need to be trimmed away with scissors, but we are almost done. The last step is to spray just a little yellow spray paint over the top of the tree. The goal is to slightly lighten the upper leaves to achieve a highlighting effect. Generally though, the goal is not to turn the tree yellow. It is easy to overdue the effect. If that happens, a little ground foam on the wet yellow paint solves the problem.



Two nearly finished trees. I need to prune one or two errant fibers still, but these trees are almost ready for planting on the module. Overall, I did a dozen trees in a week. The first night was about two hours of work getting to wire trees, and the remaining nights were 10-30 minutes. The slow part is allowing things to dry between steps. If done in an assembly line fashion, I could probably make 60-70 trees a week this way, with an investment of about 15 hours of work. A little slow, but the results are fantastic.

T is for Trees

Well, one thing I know I am going to need for the layout is some more trees. I planted my first one at the show, which has since been removed to allow for scenery to proceed. I have 7 more just like it, ready to go, however, that is no where near enough.


In addition, the tree is close to 100' tall (2.5") in T. So, I have some work to do. It seems feasible to cut the height down a bit, and get maybe two trees, instead of one. But ultimately, I need more trees. So, that became the project last night, getting those trees going.


Proudly hanging from my "tree-line" are another 112 trees like my first 8. I added another 40 after the picture that are simply painted, without ground foam as an experiment. All are made from Bump Chenille, and I think this gets me going on evergreens for the layout. After all, 160 evergreens in less than 3 square feet should be plenty...

Of course, researching the actual composition of trees in Scotland led to the quick revelation that evergreens are but a small minority of tree species in Scotland. Most of the types there are Deciduous trees. So, I will need to make some of those. I have a plan to make them from homemade wire armatures, with polyfiber and ground foam canopies. I've made one sample in N scale, and I was quite pleased. Now to see if it can be scaled down for T. And so, out came the polyfiber and the green spray paint.


I think this will produce enough for a small forest of T scale trees. And while I was at the paint work, I took the opportunity to paint a few T-scale British freight cars, as well as a few passenger cars and a few engine bodies I found in a box that I had ordered years ago. So, the roster is expanding.

T going forward??? After the Layout...

Flush with the experience at the show last week, I have been thinking about T going forward. I am pleased with what I have done, and want to finish the existing layout - but would I want to do something more in T?

I am very fond of a few T layouts I have seen, including Tgauge.com's first layout, seen here.


And then there is Sarum Bridge, seen here.



And Orboost, seen here.



And most recently, The Firth of Forth, seen here.


But what holds me up in thinking about doing something like these in T? Well, there are a couple of things. First, it is the performance of the mechanisms. I am quite excited at how much better the second generation mechanisms perform relative to the first generation. But, even so, operating below 40mph is dicey. But, could a 3rd generation mechanism do better? Well, some people are trying.


Notably, this video is fairly old, and the current mechanisms, while aided by better PWM controllers, aren't at this level yet. But, I will admit to looking at designing my own mechanism, fresh off my 3D printing successes.

Coupling is another issue - but here again, innovation is at work.


And if you can couple - you can shunt (or switch).


Not perfect, but becoming more and more feasible. And even better, today this new item appeared on Tgauge.com. (Link) Here is a video of the system in action.

Even folks in Z and N are going to love these little gems. And of course, some people have figured out turnouts.


These are the commercially available units, and people have also succeeded with handlaid turnouts.

So, with these ideas in mind, I started thinking about what I might do. While I could go mad, and try to work on US T Gauge - there was something nice about the British T Gauge, and more and more of that seems to be coming onto the market. So, there are two British Exhibition layouts that have caught my attention, both in N.


Loch Oran is 4'x12' in N, or would be about 16" x 48" in T, except that I would almost certainly build it larger, just for sanity and for performance. The other is shown here.


Fantastic models. And of course, I have been partial to the Ribblehead viaduct, which I have seen done in N scale and I also found a 4mm scale version.



Or, of course, I could look at a Glenfinnan Viaduct Model...that I have not seen.


And of course, there is also the idea of maybe doing something in another scale for which little has been done in Britain, but which may be much more operation ready, what about British Z? Particularly with the new Atlas Turnouts coming out...Hmmm. Oh well, just a bit of day dreaming.
